By Ryan Riggins · Updated

Free, plain-English senior help in Wayne County, NC: the Tax Department on East Walnut Street in Goldsboro and the 2026 and 2027 income limits for North Carolina's three relief programs, why Wayne's 2025 revaluation keeps it out of the 2026 delay law, Services on Aging at the Peggy M. Seegars Senior Center for in-home aides, group respite, free check-in calls and SHIIP appointments, WAGES Meals on Wheels and senior lunch in Goldsboro and Mount Olive, the Food Bank's Raleigh branch, GWTA half-price bus fares at 60, weatherization and heating repair through WAGES, roof repair through Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne, free legal help through Legal Aid's Wilson office and its Goldsboro branch, and what to do when no PACE program serves the county.

Free, plain-English help for seniors and families in Wayne County, NC. Education, not advice. Verify before you rely on it.

Start here (works anywhere)

  • 211 (dial 2-1-1), Eldercare Locator 1-800-677-1116, Medicare 1-800-633-4227, Social Security 1-800-772-1213, VA 1-800-827-1000, Alzheimer's 24/7 Helpline 1-800-272-3900, National Elder Fraud Hotline 1-833-372-8311, Crisis Lifeline 988

Three local front doors: Wayne County Services on Aging (Peggy M. Seegars Senior Center), 2001 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530, 919-731-1591 | Wayne County Department of Social Services, 1560 Clingman Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530, 919-580-4034 | WAGES (Wayne Action Group for Economic Solvency), 601 Royall Avenue, Goldsboro, NC 27534, 919-734-1178. The regional Eastern Carolina Council Area Agency on Aging is 252-638-3185. And 2-1-1, or 1-888-892-1162.

Services on Aging is the senior door. Wayne County Services on Aging works out of the Peggy M. Seegars Senior Center, 2001 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro (mail to P.O. Box 227, Goldsboro, NC 27533), main line 919-731-1591. The center is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to noon. The state's senior center directory lists it as a Center of Excellence, opened in 1978. The director is Paula Edwards (919-705-1785). The county lists these services:

  • In-home aide help at Levels I to III. The county says the program helps about 85 seniors, with just as many on the waiting list, so call early.
  • Group respite for people with dementia on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, limited to 10 participants a day (more under Caregiver support).
  • The Family Caregiver Support Program, with a waiting list.
  • An information and options counselor who helps a family sort out choices.
  • SHIIP Medicare counseling by appointment (below).
  • Health promotion and fitness: chair exercise, line dancing, a walking group and a walking track.

The county's senior resource guide also lists a free Friendly Call program, regular check-in phone calls for an older adult who lives alone, at the same number, 919-731-1591.

Social Services is the benefits office. Wayne County DSS lists its address as 1560 Clingman Street, Goldsboro, main line 919-580-4034. Some county pages still send walk-in applicants to 301 N. Herman Street, so call before you go. The director is Kimberly McGuire. DSS handles Medicaid, food and nutrition benefits, heating help, Adult Protective Services, adult care home placement, guardianship when a court orders it, and Special Assistance In-Home (below).

WAGES is the community action agency. WAGES, 601 Royall Avenue, Goldsboro, 919-734-1178, runs Meals on Wheels and senior lunch, weatherization, heating and air repair, the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs, and case management. More below.

Eastern Carolina Council is the regional layer. Wayne County's Area Agency on Aging is the Eastern Carolina Council of Governments, 233 Middle Street, Third Floor, New Bern (mail to P.O. Box 1717, New Bern, NC 28563), 252-638-3185. It runs the regional Long-Term Care Ombudsman program and publishes a free Wayne County Older Adult and Caregiver Resource Sheet (2026) that lists the licensed home care agencies, adult care homes and nursing homes in the county.

Goldsboro's 50-plus programs. The City of Goldsboro Parks and Recreation department runs programs for adults 50 and up: Golden Agers, Swimnastics, yoga, fitness and line dancing classes, day trips, and a "Taking Fear Out of Computers" class. Call Stephanie Harrell at 919-739-7489. The city also runs the Wayne County Senior Games each April for ages 50 and up (919-739-7449).

Property tax relief (apply with the Wayne County Tax Department, 919-731-1461)

The office. Senior and disability relief is handled by the Wayne County Tax Department, 224 E. Walnut Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530 (mail to P.O. Box 227, Goldsboro), Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Tax Administrator is Alan Lumpkin, whom the state's official list of county assessors (revised September 23, 2026) names as Wayne's County Assessor at 919-731-1461, the department's listing line. Other lines: Tax Collections 919-731-1478, Tax Mapping 919-731-1585. Payments by mail go to a different box: Wayne County Tax Collector, P.O. Box 1495, Goldsboro, NC 27533.

The three programs. All three are set by the state and filed on the state's Form AV-9 with the county. The county posts the AV-9 and the veterans' form on its Tax Forms page.

  • Elderly or Disabled Exclusion. It excludes the greater of $25,000 or 50 percent of the appraised value of the home, and the county notes that includes mobile homes. You must be 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled (the county asks for a licensed physician's certification), and own and live in the home. Income for the prior year must be within the state limit: $38,800 for the 2026 tax year, $39,900 for 2027. The county's relief page still prints last year's $37,900 figure; the state's 2026 and 2027 forms are the current numbers. For a married couple living together, both incomes count.
  • Circuit Breaker Tax Deferment. Caps the tax at 4 percent of income up to $38,800 and 5 percent from $38,801 to $58,200 for 2026 (for 2027 the ceilings are $39,900 and $59,850). The owner must be 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled and must have owned and lived in the home at least five years. The county says annual applications are required, and the state form says the same in capital letters. This is a deferral, not forgiveness. The county says that when the owner dies, transfers the property or stops living there, the last three years of deferred taxes become due, with exceptions for a spouse or co-owner who keeps the home. After a death, the county says those taxes become delinquent on the first day of the ninth month after the date of death. Understand that before your parent signs, especially if the plan is to sell the house or leave it to family.
  • Disabled Veteran Exclusion. Excludes the first $45,000 of the appraised value for an honorably discharged veteran with a permanent and total service-connected disability, or an unmarried surviving spouse. The county lists no age or income restrictions, asks for a VA award letter, and calls it a one-time application. File the AV-9 with Form NCDVA-9. Wayne County Veterans Services (below) can help with the paperwork.

Deadline. The county says applications are due by June 1. Mark June 1 on the calendar every year for the Circuit Breaker, and once for the other two.

Wayne revalued in 2025. The county says it conducted a property revaluation in 2025 and mailed new value notices in March 2025. Its FAQ explains why it came early: state rules require a new revaluation within three years when values drift below 85 percent or above 115 percent of market. The 2026 state law that pushed new values back a year applies to counties whose reappraisal took effect January 1, 2026, so it does not reach Wayne. The county has not posted the year of its next revaluation. Remember that the Elderly or Disabled Exclusion takes off half the appraised value, so the excluded part grows with a higher value.

Rates and bills. The county's 2026 rate is 62.59 cents per $100. Towns add their own: Goldsboro 69 cents (a combined $1.3159), Mount Olive 72 cents, Fremont 59 cents, Seven Springs 59 cents, Pikeville 54 cents, Eureka 53 cents and Walnut Creek 40 cents. Fire districts add 6.5 to 9 cents. Pay online through the county's Pay Taxes Online link, by mail or in person. We are not printing bill and interest dates because the county does not post them; call Tax Collections at 919-731-1478 for those, and ask whether a payment plan fits a parent on a fixed income.

Paperwork that protects the house. The Wayne County Register of Deeds, Tina Arnder, is at 224-226 E. Walnut Street, Suite 100, Goldsboro, 919-731-1449, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (real estate filings until 4:45 p.m.). A power of attorney that will be used for real estate is recorded there.

Food

Meals on Wheels at home. WAGES runs Meals on Wheels in Wayne County. WAGES says meals go to people who are homebound, unable to prepare meals for themselves, and have no one in the home to prepare them. Volunteers deliver Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., on routes throughout Wayne County, and the program runs on voluntary donations, not a fee. Call WAGES at 919-734-1178; the county's senior guide lists extension 285 or 919-580-1790 for meals. The Area Agency on Aging's resource sheet also lists Services on Aging (919-731-1591) for meals, so either call will get you started. Ask whether there is a wait.

Lunch with company at 60. WAGES serves a hot lunch for seniors 60 and older who are not homebound at two sites: the Peggy M. Seegars Senior Center, 2001 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro, at 11:30 a.m. Monday to Friday, and the Mount Olive nutrition site, 711 NW Center Street, Mount Olive. Call 919-734-1178 to sign up.

The regional food bank. The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina serves Wayne County from its Raleigh headquarters, 1924 Capital Boulevard, Raleigh, 919-875-0707, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It supplies local pantries; for the nearest one, dial 2-1-1 and call before you go.

Local meals and pantries. The county's 2025 senior resource guide lists, among others:

  • Community Soup Kitchen, 112 W. Oak Street, Goldsboro, 919-731-3939, which the guide says serves 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, holidays included.
  • Community Crisis Center, 607 S. Slocumb Street, 919-734-6836, with a soup kitchen hour on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.
  • The Salvation Army, 610 N. William Street, Goldsboro, 919-735-4811, open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed noon to 1), with a Friday food pickup.
  • United Church Ministries, 119 W. Walnut Street, 919-734-0480, for food referrals on weekdays.
  • Area Churches in Action in Mount Olive, 919-658-0942, for the Dudley, Seven Springs, Calypso and Mount Olive areas only.

Hours change, so call ahead.

Food and Nutrition Services (SNAP). Apply online through ePASS (epass.nc.gov) or call Wayne DSS at 919-580-4034 to have an application mailed. To report a change, call 919-731-1126.

Energy and utility help

Where to apply: Wayne County DSS, 919-580-4034. North Carolina's heating programs are applied for through ePASS or in person at DSS. The county's energy page lists 1560 Clingman Street and the email energy.assistance@waynegov.com.

LIEAP. A once-a-year payment toward heating bills, sent straight to the vendor. Both the state and the county say households with someone 60 or older, or a disabled person receiving services through the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services, can sign up December 1 to 31; everyone else applies January 1 to March 31 or until the money runs out. December is four weeks away; get the paperwork together now.

CIP. The Crisis Intervention Program is for heating or cooling emergencies, taken July 1 to June 30 or until the money runs out. Wayne DSS says the most the state allows in a fiscal year is $600, and you need a disconnect notice, final notice or past-due bill. The county adds that CIP cannot pay a bill in a deceased person's name, which matters when a parent has died and the account was never changed. The state says a household with a member 60 or older or disabled can have resources at or below $4,500.

Too hot, not just too cold. North Carolina's Operation Fan Heat Relief lists two Wayne providers: Services on Aging (Paula Edwards, 919-705-1785) and WAGES (919-734-1178). The season has ended for this year; note it for next spring.

The electric bill. Much of rural Wayne is served by Tri-County Electric Membership Corporation, 4255 US 117 Alt, Dudley, 919-735-2611 (24 hours), toll free 800-548-4869. Its Operation Round Up fund takes applications from individuals for help, and it offers budget billing. Other homes are on Duke Energy Progress; Duke's Payment Assistance Finder on its website lists the agencies that help with its bills by ZIP code. The Town of Pikeville runs its own electric system and says it does not offer individual energy assistance; it sends residents to Wayne DSS. The City of Goldsboro sells water, not power; its utility customer service line is 919-580-4354, at City Hall, 200 N. Center Street.

Medicare, Medicaid, prescriptions

Free Medicare counseling, in Goldsboro. North Carolina's Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), run by the NC Department of Insurance, gives free, unbiased Medicare counseling at 1-855-408-1212, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wayne County's SHIIP volunteers work through Services on Aging; the county says to call 919-731-1591 for an appointment. Medicare open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, so call this week. Bring the Annual Notice of Change that arrived in October.

Help paying Medicare costs and prescriptions. The Medicare Savings Programs can pay Medicare premiums, and Extra Help lowers Part D drug costs. SHIIP counselors cover both, and Social Security (1-800-772-1213) handles Extra Help. NC MedAssist (1-866-331-1348) gives free prescription medicine to uninsured North Carolinians with household income below 300 percent of poverty, and says it may help some Medicare patients case by case. We are not printing income limits for the Medicare programs; ask SHIIP to check them against your parent's numbers.

Medicaid, and a reason to apply before December 31. Apply online through ePASS or through Wayne DSS at 919-580-4034; report Medicaid changes at 919-731-1022. The NC Medicaid Contact Center is 888-245-0179, and the NC Medicaid Ombudsman is 1-877-201-3750, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. NC Medicaid says that if you apply by December 31, 2026, Medicaid will cover approved costs for up to 3 months before you applied. Starting January 1, 2027, that window shrinks to up to 2 months for adults 65 and older and people with a disability. If a parent is heading toward a nursing home or already paying for care, that difference can be real money.

Staying home on Medicaid: CAP/DA. The Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults (CAP/DA) is North Carolina's Medicaid waiver that brings in-home aide help, respite and case management so someone who would otherwise qualify for a nursing home can stay home. NC Medicaid's list of case management agencies for Wayne County names Lenoir Memorial Hospital, 252-522-7831; Primary Health Choice, 910-865-3500; RHA Management Services, 888-207-7828; and Walkers Home Care, 252-432-6308. Ask DSS (919-580-4034) which one is taking referrals.

Special Assistance In-Home. Wayne DSS says Special Assistance In-Home gives cash payments to help eligible low-income adults keep living at home instead of moving to an adult care home, after an assessment by a social worker. Call 919-580-4034.

Mental health. Wayne County's public mental health plan is Trillium Health Resources. Its Behavioral Health Crisis Line is 888-302-0738; member and recipient services is 877-685-2415. (Older county guides name Eastpointe; that plan no longer serves Wayne.)

Home repair and safety

  • In-home aides. Services on Aging runs in-home aide help at Levels I to III (919-731-1591), and the county's guide lists a DSS In-Home Aide Services program for people over 60 who do not receive Medicaid, as funding allows (919-580-4034). Both have waits.
  • Weatherization and heating repair. WAGES is the weatherization provider for Wayne, Greene, Wilson, Pitt and Lenoir counties, 601 Royall Avenue, Goldsboro, 919-734-1178, extension 223. It takes applications year round for low-income households, gives special consideration to the elderly and people with disabilities, and does the work at no cost to homeowners who qualify. Renters can apply with a signed statement from the owner. Its Heating and Air Repair and Replacement Program repairs or replaces heating and cooling equipment for eligible elderly and disabled people. WAGES says weatherization cannot do major repairs such as new roofs, floors, plumbing or electrical work. Bring proof of income, proof of ownership, and electric and gas bills.
  • Roof repair. Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne is taking Critical Home Repair applications for its "A Roof Above" program: you must own your home in Wayne or Lenoir County, need a roof repair or replacement, be under its income limits (for example $42,800 for one person, $48,900 for two), and be willing to pay at least a quarter of the cost. Apply online, at 2719 Graves Drive, Suite 3, Goldsboro, or at 919-736-9592, extension 1.
  • Accessibility changes. The Independent Living Rehabilitation Program's Greenville office, 252-999-7350, is the state housing agency's Displacement Prevention Partnership partner for Wayne County; that program pays for accessibility changes that keep a person with a disability from having to move.
  • What is not open right now. We found no Urgent Repair or Single-Family Rehab partner for Wayne County on the state housing agency's current partner list, and the City of Goldsboro's CDBG home rehab program says it is not accepting applications. Ask Services on Aging (919-731-1591) about small home repairs, or dial 2-1-1, for ramps and emergency fixes.

Safety nets worth setting up.

  • Friendly Call. Free check-in calls through Services on Aging, 919-731-1591, for a parent who lives alone.
  • CodeRED. Wayne County Emergency Management sends weather and emergency alerts through CodeRED; sign your parent's phone up on the county's preparedness page.

Rent, housing, emergency cash

  • WAGES, 919-734-1178: the Senior Companion Program (extension 202) pairs volunteers 55 and older with older adults who want to keep living on their own.
  • Wayne DSS, 919-580-4034: the county's guide lists emergency assistance for rent, food, utilities, fuel and medicine.
  • Public housing and vouchers. The Housing Authority of the City of Goldsboro, 700 N. Jefferson Avenue, 919-735-4226, and the Eastern Carolina Regional Housing Authority, 2120 S. Slocumb Street, Goldsboro, 919-735-0435. Mount Olive has its own housing authority. Ask whether waiting lists are open.
  • Help with a bill. The county's guide lists the Salvation Army (919-735-4811), United Church Ministries (919-734-0480) and the Community Crisis Center (919-734-6836) for rent and utility help, usually with a final or disconnect notice in hand.
  • Senior housing list. Services on Aging keeps a housing list; ask the options counselor at 919-731-1608.
  • 2-1-1 knows which church funds and ministries have money this week. The state's NC Housing Search line is 1-877-428-8844.

Transportation

GWTA (Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority). 919-736-1374, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the transfer center is at 103 N. Carolina Street, Goldsboro.

  • City buses. Five routes in Goldsboro plus a Mount Olive connector and circulator, Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays and holidays 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. No Sunday service. Seniors 60 and older and people with disabilities pay the reduced fare, 50 cents a trip (full fare is $1). Show a birthdate document or Medicare card with a picture ID.
  • Vans anywhere in the county. GWTA vans go anywhere in Wayne County for $5 per person per destination. Book at least two business days ahead; voicemail requests are accepted. Inside Goldsboro, be ready an hour before your appointment; elsewhere in the county, two hours. Pickups run from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Medical trips out of county. GWTA vans go to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, Duke in Durham, WakeMed in Raleigh and the hospital in Greenville (formerly Pitt Memorial).
  • ADA paratransit. For qualified riders with disabilities who live and are going within three-quarters of a mile of a city bus route; book one day ahead. A personal care attendant rides free.
  • Ask GWTA whether there is a discount or grant for seniors who use the vans; we could not confirm one.

Medicaid rides. Wayne Medicaid members call the DSS Transportation Line at 919-731-1095 at least three business days before the appointment, by 10 a.m. If your parent is in a Medicaid health plan, the plan's own ride line also works.

Legal help

Senior Legal Helpline. Legal Aid of North Carolina's Senior Legal Helpline gives free civil legal help to North Carolinians 60 and older: 1-877-579-7562, Monday to Friday 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.

Legal Aid of North Carolina, Wilson office and Goldsboro branch. The Wilson office serves Edgecombe, Greene, Lenoir, Nash, Wayne and Wilson counties from 208 Goldsboro Street E., Wilson, NC 27893, 252-291-6851, toll free 1-800-682-7902, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its Goldsboro branch is at 218 E. Walnut Street, Goldsboro, 919-731-2303, open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Friday by appointment. Legal Aid's statewide intake line is 1-866-219-5262.

Protecting an older adult.

  • Wayne County Adult Protective Services: call DSS at 919-580-4034 Monday to Friday. After hours, on weekends and holidays, call 919-705-1212. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. North Carolina law requires anyone who suspects a disabled adult is being abused, neglected or exploited to report it.
  • Long-Term Care Ombudsman, for problems in a nursing home or assisted living: the Eastern Carolina Council Area Agency on Aging, 252-638-3185. The state's nursing home complaint hotline is 1-800-624-3004.
  • NC Attorney General Consumer Protection: 1-877-566-7226 (1-877-5-NO-SCAM).
  • National Elder Fraud Hotline: 1-833-372-8311.

Paperwork offices you will need. Powers of attorney for real estate are recorded at the Register of Deeds, 224-226 E. Walnut Street, Goldsboro, 919-731-1449. Wills and estates are handled by the Clerk of Superior Court, Wayne County Courthouse, 224 E. Walnut Street, Room 230, Goldsboro, 919-722-6100, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The court asks people opening a new estate to arrive before 4:30 p.m.

For veterans. Wayne County Veterans Services, 2001 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro, 919-731-1490. The service officers see people Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. only, first come, first served; the office does not schedule appointments. It is the place to start on the NCDVA-9 form for the $45,000 Disabled Veteran Exclusion and on VA pension and survivor claims. The director is Amy D. Smith.

Caregiver support

  • Group respite at the senior center. Services on Aging runs group respite for people with dementia on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 participants a day, so a caregiver gets a few hours off. Call 919-731-1591 for hours and openings.
  • Family Caregiver Support Program. Through Services on Aging (919-731-1591): in-home respite help with a waiting list, a respite voucher, and a caregiver lending library. The county also lists a monthly Alzheimer's support group; call for the current day and time.
  • Deaf and hard of hearing support group, third Saturday of each month at 11:30 a.m., 2001 E. Ash Street.
  • Project C.A.R.E. Dementia-specific support and respite for families caring for someone with Alzheimer's or another dementia at home. The state's office for Wayne County, run by the Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging, is at 252-414-3230.
  • Adult day. The state's September 2026 list of certified adult day programs shows none in Wayne County. Ask Services on Aging about group respite instead.
  • Dementia Alliance of North Carolina: 1-800-228-8738. Alzheimer's Association, 24/7 Helpline: 1-800-272-3900.

PACE

No PACE program serves Wayne County.

PACE, the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, takes over a person's whole care plan so someone who needs a nursing home level of care can keep living at home. NC Medicaid's official list of the state's 11 PACE organizations does not name Wayne County or any Wayne ZIP code, and there is no PACE center in Goldsboro.

  • The nearest program, Carolina SeniorCare's New Bern center, covers Lenoir County next door, but not Wayne.
  • Some older websites, including an earlier page of ours, say LIFE St. Joseph of the Pines in Fayetteville serves Wayne. The state's current list shows it serves Cumberland County and portions of Harnett, Robeson, Moore and Hoke only.

What to use instead. Ask Wayne DSS (919-580-4034) about CAP/DA and Special Assistance In-Home, ask Services on Aging (919-731-1591) about in-home aides and group respite, and ask the Area Agency on Aging (252-638-3185) what else can keep your parent at home. If a parent moves to a county a PACE program serves, the Eldercare Locator (1-800-677-1116) can point you to it.

Frequently asked questions

Mom is 74, lives in Goldsboro, and gets about $2,900 a month from Social Security and a small pension. Does she qualify for a tax break? Likely. About $2,900 a month is about $34,800 a year, under the $38,800 limit for 2026 and the $39,900 limit for 2027, as long as that is the whole household's income, including a spouse's. The Elderly or Disabled Exclusion takes the greater of $25,000 or half her home's value off. File Form AV-9 by June 1. Call the Tax Department at 919-731-1461.

Should my father use the Circuit Breaker instead? Go in with open eyes. It caps his tax at 4 or 5 percent of income, but the rest is deferred, not forgiven: on a sale, a death or a move, the last three years of deferred taxes come due. He needs five years of ownership and must file every year. If his income is under the exclusion limit, the exclusion is usually simpler. Ask the Tax Department to run both, and talk to the Senior Legal Helpline (1-877-579-7562) if the house is part of an estate plan.

Mom's savings are running out and she may need Medicaid for care. Does timing matter? It can. NC Medicaid says applications filed by December 31, 2026 can get approved costs covered for up to 3 months before the application; from January 1, 2027 that drops to 2 months for adults 65 and older. Call Wayne DSS at 919-580-4034, and talk to the Senior Legal Helpline before moving any assets.

Dad has dementia and Mom is wearing out. Where does she get a break? Call Services on Aging at 919-731-1591 about group respite on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and the Family Caregiver Support Program. Call Project C.A.R.E. at 252-414-3230 for dementia-specific help. There is no PACE program or certified adult day center in Wayne County, so ask DSS (919-580-4034) about CAP/DA if he qualifies for Medicaid.

Mom lives alone in Mount Olive and I live out of state. What can I set up today? Sign her up for Friendly Call check-ins and ask about in-home aides at Services on Aging (919-731-1591). Call WAGES (919-734-1178) about Meals on Wheels or lunch at the Mount Olive nutrition site. Set her up with GWTA (919-736-1374) for the Mount Olive connector at the 50-cent senior fare. Book a SHIIP Medicare review through Services on Aging before December 7, and mark December 1 for her LIEAP heating application at DSS.
