The Guilford County Senior Help Directory: Programs Most Families Never Hear About

A plain-English directory of senior assistance in Guilford County and NC: Meals on Wheels, LIEAP energy help, SHIIP Medicare, NC MedAssist prescriptions, home repair grants, PACE, Legal Aid, and the 3 numbers that open most doors. Free.

Last updated June 3, 2026. Important: I am a licensed North Carolina real estate agent, but Riggins Strategic Solutions is an education and media company, not a real estate sales business. I am not here to list or sell your house. I am also not a financial advisor and not an attorney. This is general education only, not financial, tax, medical, or legal advice. Programs, income limits, and contacts change, so verify current details with each program before you rely on them.

When my own family started navigating a senior transition, I learned fast that the help is out there, but nobody hands you the list. Caseworkers are stretched thin, websites are scattered, and most families find out about a program a year after they needed it. So here's the list, in plain English, for Guilford County and North Carolina. Most of it is built for seniors (age 60 or 65 and up), but several of these will help anyone who's stretched thin. It's part of our growing Senior Help Directory.

If you only remember three phone numbers, remember these. They open most of the doors below.

  • NC 211: dial 2-1-1 (or 1-888-892-1162). Free, 24/7, every county. The "I don't know where to start" number. They route you to rent, utility, food, and medical help near you.
  • Senior Resources of Guilford: the local hub for anyone 60+. Meals, in-home help, caregiver support, and more.
  • Guilford County DSS: 336-641-3000. The front door for energy assistance, food benefits, and Medicaid.

One big category has its own guide. If the pressure point is the property tax bill, especially with the 2026 Guilford County reappraisal, I broke those programs out separately in NC Senior Property Tax Relief: 5 Guilford County Programs.

Food

  • Meals on Wheels delivers a hot noon meal to homebound seniors 60+ in Guilford County. Greensboro area 336-333-6981, High Point/Jamestown 336-884-6981. Through Senior Resources of Guilford.
  • SNAP (food stamps) through Guilford County DSS. SNAP line 336-641-3447. Income-based, not age-based, so working families qualify too.
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC connects you to 470+ pantries and meal programs across the region, including Guilford. 336-744-3456, secondharvestnwnc.org.
  • Greensboro Urban Ministry for emergency food and crisis help.

Heating, Cooling, and Utility Bills

  • LIEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance Program): a one-time annual payment toward heating costs. Households with someone 60+ or a disabled adult get a priority sign-up window (typically December), everyone else from January until funds run out. Income under 130% of the federal poverty level. Apply through Guilford County DSS or at epass.nc.gov.
  • Crisis Intervention Program (CIP): for households in a heating OR cooling emergency (shutoff notice, broken unit). Same office.
  • Duke Energy offers customer assistance and a low-income program, ask them directly or let 211 connect you.

Medicare, Medicaid, and Prescriptions

  • SHIIP (Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program): free, unbiased Medicare counseling from the NC Department of Insurance. 1-855-408-1212. Start here before any Medicare decision.
  • Medicare Savings Programs help pay Part A and B premiums for lower-income beneficiaries. Apply through DSS or ask SHIIP.
  • Extra Help / Low-Income Subsidy cuts Part D prescription drug costs for those who qualify.
  • NC MedAssist Free Pharmacy Program: free prescription medications for uninsured NC residents under the income limit (around 300% of the federal poverty level). 1-866-331-1348, medassist.org. They also run mobile free-pharmacy events.

Home Repairs and Safety

  • USDA Section 504 grants up to $10,000 for very-low-income homeowners 62+ to remove health and safety hazards (loans available too, combined up to $50,000). For eligible rural areas, check with USDA Rural Development.
  • City of Greensboro Housing Rehabilitation programs help income-qualified homeowners with repairs.
  • PTRC Weatherization: 336-904-0300.
  • Community Housing Solutions of Guilford: repairs and accessibility modifications (ramps, grab bars). 336-676-6986.

Rent, Housing, and Emergency Cash

  • NC 211 is the fastest route to temporary rent and utility help.
  • Salvation Army and the Welfare Reform Liaison Project (the local community action agency) offer short-term emergency assistance.
  • Guilford County DSS administers several emergency and self-sufficiency programs.

Transportation

  • GTA Access GSO paratransit, curb-to-curb service inside Greensboro city limits for riders whose disability prevents using fixed-route buses. Reservations 336-333-6589.
  • Guilford County provides senior transportation to meals, senior programs, and adult day care.

Legal Help

  • Legal Aid of North Carolina for free civil legal help for low-income residents facing eviction, foreclosure, benefit denials, or scams. This is the one to call before a problem becomes a lawsuit.

Caregiver Support (help for the family, not just the senior)

  • NC Family Caregiver Support Program, run locally through Senior Resources of Guilford, offers options counseling, respite care referrals, and support groups so the caregiver doesn't burn out. Family Caregiver Specialist Brent Howerton, 336-373-4816 ext. 240.

Staying at Home Instead of a Nursing Home

  • PACE of the Triad (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) coordinates a senior's entire medical care, primary care, day program, therapy, personal care, and transportation, so people who would otherwise qualify for a nursing home can keep living at home. Serves Guilford and surrounding counties. 336-550-4040 (East Greensboro center at 1471 E Cone Blvd).

How to actually use this list

Don't try to call all of it. Pick the one pressure point that's hurting most right now, food, the power bill, prescriptions, the house, and start with that program or with 211. An adult child can call and help an aging parent apply, just have proof of age, proof of income, and the relevant paperwork handy.

If this helped, share it with a neighbor or a church group. The whole reason these programs go unused is that nobody passes the list along.
