Three local front doors open most of these:
- NC 211: dial 2-1-1. Free, 24/7. Routes you to rent, utility, food, and medical help.
- Davie County Senior Services: 336-753-6230. Local aging programs, homebound meals, and caregiver help.
- Davie County DSS: 336-753-6180. Energy assistance, food benefits, and Medicaid.
Property tax relief
North Carolina's senior tax programs are administered by Davie County Tax Administration (123 South Main Street, Mocksville). To request the elderly or disabled exclusion application, call 336-753-6120 (other lines: revaluation and land records 336-753-6140, collections 336-753-6130). The deadline for all three is June 1, and after a county revaluation, watch your mail for relief deadlines.
- Homestead Exclusion: greater of $25,000 or 50% off taxable value. Income limit $38,800 for the 2026 tax year. Age 65+ or totally and permanently disabled.
- Circuit Breaker: caps tax at 4% of income (up to $38,800) or 5% (up to $58,200). CAUTION: it's a deferral, not forgiveness. The unpaid difference for the current and three prior years becomes a lien with interest, due when the home is sold or the owner passes. It requires a new application every year, and you cannot combine it with the Homestead Exclusion. Understand it before you sign.
- Disabled Veteran Exclusion: $45,000 off, no income limit, no age requirement. An unmarried surviving spouse may also qualify.
All three use Form AV-9, available from the tax office. If you missed the June 1 deadline, call and ask: late applications can sometimes be accepted for good cause. Food
- Davie County Senior Services Homebound Meals delivers a meal plus a check-in to homebound residents 60+ who cannot prepare their own food. 336-753-6230 (Bobby H. Knight Senior Services Building, 278 Meroney Street, Mocksville). Senior Services also runs congregate senior lunches.
- A Storehouse for Jesus is the county's largest help ministry: a food pantry (Davie residents first), clothing, and medical, dental, and eye clinics. 336-751-1060 (675 E. Lexington Road, Mocksville).
- Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC supplies a network of partner pantries. Find the nearest one at 336-784-5770 or dial 211.
- SNAP (food stamps) through Davie County DSS is income-based, so working families qualify too. Apply at epass.nc.gov or 336-753-6180.
Heating, cooling, and utility bills
- LIEAP (a one-time heating payment) and the year-round Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) for a heating or cooling emergency, through Davie County DSS at 336-753-6180 (154 Government Center Drive, Mocksville) or epass.nc.gov. Households with a member 60+ or a disabled member get a priority sign-up window opening in December.
- A Storehouse for Jesus (336-751-1060) and local churches can help with additional crisis needs; 211 will route you.
- Duke Energy offers customer assistance for past-due accounts; ask them directly or let 211 connect you.
Medicare, Medicaid, and prescriptions
- SHIIP free, unbiased Medicare counseling from the NC Department of Insurance: 1-855-408-1212. Davie County Senior Services (336-753-6230) can also connect you with a local SHIIP counselor. Start here before any Medicare decision.
- Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help / Low-Income Subsidy: apply through Davie County DSS or ask SHIIP.
- NC MedAssist Free Pharmacy for uninsured NC residents under the income limit: 1-866-331-1348.
Home repairs and safety
- YVEDDI Weatherization Assistance Program is the local provider for Davie County. YVEDDI (Yadkin Valley Economic Development District) weatherizes homes of low-income, elderly, and disabled residents (income up to 200% of the federal poverty level) with insulation and air sealing, and runs HARRP, the Heating Appliance Repair and Replacement Program, to fix or replace heating systems. 336-367-7251.
- NCHFA Urgent Repair Program funds emergency repairs and accessibility modifications (ramps, grab bars) for very-low-income homeowners with a special need, such as being 62+ or disabled. It runs through a local agency; ask Davie County Senior Services (336-753-6230), DSS, or 211 for the current provider.
- USDA Section 504 grants up to $10,000 for very-low-income homeowners 62+ in eligible rural areas, through USDA Rural Development.
- Davie County Senior Services can also point you to in-home aid and minor home-modification help. 336-753-6230.
Rent, housing, and emergency cash
- A Storehouse for Jesus is the county's main emergency-help ministry: food, clothing, medical assistance, and crisis support for Davie residents. 336-751-1060 (675 E. Lexington Road, Mocksville).
- NC 211 is the fastest route to other temporary rent and utility help.
- Davie County DSS administers emergency and adult services. Economic Services 336-753-6180; Adult and Protective Services 336-753-6250.
Transportation
- YVEDDI Public Transportation provides door-to-door rides in Davie County (and Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin) for medical appointments, senior programs, and other trips. 336-367-7251, Monday to Friday. Typical fares run $2 each way in town and $3 in the county, with the NC DOT elderly-and-disabled grant asking a cost-share donation of $2 per round trip. Schedule ahead.
- Residents with full Medicaid and no other way to travel may qualify for free non-emergency medical transportation; ask DSS at 336-753-6180.
Legal help
- NC Legal Aid Senior Legal Helpline: free civil legal help for anyone 60+, no income limit (powers of attorney, wills, Medicaid and benefits, housing, scams). 1-877-579-7562, Monday to Friday 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.
- Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging (the regional aging agency for Davie): free options counseling, benefits help, and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman for nursing-home and assisted-living complaints. 336-904-0300.

Caregiver support
- Davie County Senior Services runs the local Family Caregiver Support Program: information, options counseling, caregiver education, and limited respite for those caring for an adult 60+ (or for caregivers of someone under 60 with early-onset dementia). 336-753-6230 (278 Meroney Street, Mocksville).
- The NC Family Caregiver Support Program, supported regionally through the PTRC Area Agency on Aging, adds coaching, options counseling, and respite referrals so the family caregiver does not burn out. 336-904-0300.
Staying at home instead of a nursing home
- Carolina SeniorCare (PACE) serves Davie County from Lexington. PACE coordinates a senior's entire medical care, primary care, a day center, therapy, personal care, prescriptions, and transportation, so someone who would otherwise qualify for a nursing home can keep living at home. For adults 55+ at a nursing-home level of care who live in the service area (Davidson, Davie, Iredell, Rowan); most participants pay nothing through Medicare and Medicaid. 336-746-3500 (toll-free 833-233-4476; 802 East Center Street, Lexington).
